What are your major responsibilities in coordinating services to the 128 Metro Public Schools?

I provide nutrition education to students and teachers including web sites as well as coordinate the school cafeterias as learning labs. My role encompasses working with the school cafeteria managers on sanitation and safety training as well as nutrition activities for the students such as tasting parties. Of prime importance is my responsibility in evaluating potential foods for school food service and ensuring that the products meet the USDA nutrition guidelines.

With such a broad scope of practice, what is the major challenge you face?

Keeping up with all the USDA regulatory changes!

Based on your observations, are there any opportunities for dietitians to become more involved with schools within their communities?

Definitely! The greatest needs of students are related to nutrition and health. With the current emphasis on obesity in children and teens, ideally, a dietitian could work with a cluster of schools to provide education on eating habits and lifestyle management. Also, the number of students requiring special nutrition management such as those with diabetes is increasing.

Given your years in practice, how has your perspective of our profession changed?

When I first entered actual practice, I thought about only the clinical side. Now, I view it from a much broader perspective. There are so many areas where our expertise is needed. Having a varied employment background and transferable skills are important in today's marketplace.

Professionally, one of your striking characteristics has been meeting challenges head-on and creating new ones for yourself. During a recent conversation, it came across loud and clear that you have the motto "it's never too late to try!" Would you mind sharing with the readers what recreational "challenges" you have undertaken to provide some balance in your life?

Most recently, I learned how to roller skate (the old fashioned kind). My children made fun of me, but it didn't matter! I also do white water rafting and canoeing. I've had the best time! It's a great way to unwind.
